How Geothermal Heating & Cooling Works

A geothermal heat pump doesn't make heat — it moves it. Here's what happens underground, what happens in your mechanical room, and what a real installation in north central Missouri looks like.

The Four-Step Heat Transfer Cycle

1. The Ground Loop Collects Heat

Sealed polyethylene pipe is buried in horizontal trenches or vertical bores on your property. A water-and-antifreeze solution circulates through it, picking up heat from soil that holds a steady 50–60°F all year.

2. The Heat Pump Concentrates It

Inside, a compressor and refrigerant circuit take that low-grade warmth and raise it to a comfortable supply temperature — the same physics as a refrigerator, running in the useful direction.

3. Your Ductwork Distributes It

A variable-speed blower moves conditioned air through the ducts you already have. Long, steady run cycles mean fewer temperature swings and better humidity control than short-cycling equipment.

4. Summer Simply Reverses the Cycle

In cooling mode the system pulls heat out of your house and rejects it into the cool earth instead of into 95°F outdoor air. Many systems also route that rejected heat into your water heater.

What's in a Residential Installation

Ground loop field
Horizontal loops where land allows, vertical bores on tighter lots, or a pond loop when a suitable body of water is available.
Indoor heat pump unit
Compressor, heat exchanger and blower in one cabinet — typically in a basement, utility room or mechanical closet. No outdoor condenser.
Circulating pump module
Moves the loop fluid between the earth and the heat pump.
Ductwork & controls
Existing ducts are inspected and sized; a compatible thermostat manages staging and, on many systems, desuperheater water heating.

Where the Savings Come From

Moving heat is cheaper than making it, and the ground never gets as cold as the January air. There's no fuel to buy and no combustion byproducts. Qualifying installations are eligible for the 30% US federal tax credit.

What Maintenance Looks Like

Filter changes, a coil and blower check, and a loop pressure inspection. The buried loop has no moving parts and nothing sitting outside in the weather, so annual service is straightforward.

How does a geothermal heat pump actually work?

A geothermal heat pump moves heat instead of creating it. A water solution circulates through buried pipes (the ground loop), absorbs heat from the earth in winter, and the heat pump concentrates that heat and distributes it through your ductwork. In summer the cycle reverses and heat from your home is carried back into the cooler ground.

Why is the ground a reliable heat source?

A few feet below the surface, soil in north central Missouri stays roughly 50–60°F year round. That stable temperature is far easier to draw heat from in January — and dump heat into in July — than outdoor air that swings from below zero to 100°F.

How efficient is geothermal compared to a furnace or air conditioner?

Because it moves existing heat rather than burning fuel, a geothermal system commonly delivers three to five units of heating energy per unit of electricity used. There is no combustion, no flue, and no fossil fuel delivery.

How long does installation take?

Most residential installations take several days: loop field drilling or trenching, connecting the loop to the indoor unit, tying into ductwork, then charging, flushing and commissioning the system. We walk you through the schedule before work begins.
